The Senior Healthcare Support Worker Level 3 Apprenticeship is designed for learners working within Allied Health Profession services, supporting individuals to maximise their independence, health, wellbeing and quality of life. The programme supports healthcare support workers who work alongside Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists, Dietitians and other Allied Health Professionals. Apprentices develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to provide safe, person-centred care, support rehabilitation programmes and contribute to positive patient outcomes.  

Learning is applied directly within the workplace to support rehabilitation, recovery, independence and person-centred care, enabling learners to develop practical skills that make a meaningful difference to the people they support.

The apprenticeship includes a range of core learning units that build the foundations required of a Senior Healthcare Support Worker. Learners participate in remote masterclasses, pathway workshops and workplace learning activities designed to support both professional practice and career progression.

Allied Health Professionals play a vital role in helping people recover from illness or injury, manage long-term conditions and live as independently as possible. Supporting these services requires a skilled workforce that can deliver person-centred care whilst working effectively across multidisciplinary teams. 

Allied Health Support Workers are often at the heart of rehabilitation and recovery programmes. They support individuals to develop confidence, regain function, improve wellbeing and achieve goals that help them live fuller and more independent lives. Working alongside therapists and other healthcare professionals, they contribute significantly to positive patient outcomes and service effectiveness.  

As demand for rehabilitation, community services and preventative healthcare continues to grow, organisations need support workers with the knowledge, confidence and practical skills to deliver high-quality care. The Level 3 Senior Healthcare Support Worker Apprenticeship helps develop a capable workforce that can support modern healthcare services while improving patient experiences and outcomes.

Learners should be employed within an Allied Health Profession service, therapy team, rehabilitation setting or healthcare environment where they can demonstrate the competencies required by the apprenticeship standard.

No previous Allied Health qualifications are required; however, learners will benefit from a good standard of written English and the ability to complete portfolio activities, reflective practice and workplace assessments. Functional Skills support is available where required.  

The programme combines remote masterclasses, specialist Allied Health pathway teaching, workplace competency development, coaching sessions and portfolio building through the OneFile e-portfolio system. Learners apply their learning directly in practice whilst building evidence against the apprenticeship standard.  

Assessment activities may include workplace observations, reflective accounts, professional discussions, workbooks, case studies, witness testimonies, competency assessments, learning journals, skills passports and service improvement projects. Regular progress reviews and one-to-one coaching help learners prepare for successful End-Point Assessment.  

Although employers may provide dedicated study time, learners should expect to undertake some independent learning and portfolio work outside scheduled teaching sessions.
