The Senior Healthcare Support Worker Level 3 Apprenticeship is designed for learners working within children's services, paediatric settings and community healthcare environments. The programme develops the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to provide high-quality, compassionate care whilst supporting children, young people and their families across a range of healthcare settings.  

Apprentices develop the confidence and competence to support child development, wellbeing, safeguarding and person-centred care whilst working effectively within multidisciplinary teams. Learning is applied directly within the workplace to support safe, effective and child-centred care delivery.

The apprenticeship includes a range of core learning units that build the foundations required of a Senior Healthcare Support Worker. Learners participate in interactive workshops, specialist pathway sessions and workplace learning activities designed to support professional development and workplace competence.

This apprenticeship provides a strong foundation for learners wishing to build a meaningful and rewarding career supporting children, young people and families in healthcare settings.

Children and young people require healthcare support that reflects their developmental, emotional and social needs. Healthcare support workers play a vital role in helping children access safe, compassionate and age-appropriate care whilst providing reassurance and support to families throughout their healthcare journey. 

From supporting developmental assessments and safeguarding activities to promoting positive mental wellbeing and healthy growth, Children and Young People Support Workers contribute significantly to improving outcomes for children, young people and their families.  

As healthcare services continue to focus on early intervention, prevention and family-centred care, there is increasing demand for skilled support workers who understand child development, safeguarding responsibilities and the importance of building positive relationships. The Level 3 Senior Healthcare Support Worker Apprenticeship helps develop the confidence, knowledge and practical skills required to meet these needs whilst supporting high-quality service delivery.

Learners should be employed within children's services, paediatric healthcare, community health services or another environment where they support children, young people and families and can demonstrate the competencies required by the apprenticeship standard.  

No previous paediatric qualifications are required; however, learners will benefit from a good standard of written English and the ability to complete portfolio activities, reflective practice and workplace assessments. Functional Skills support is available where required.

The programme combines online workshops, specialist Children and Young People sessions, workplace competency development, one-to-one coaching and portfolio building through the OneFile e-portfolio system. Learners apply their learning directly in practice whilst building evidence against the apprenticeship standard.  

Assessment activities may include knowledge workbooks, workplace observations, professional discussions, reflective accounts, written reports, case studies, witness testimonies, learning journals and portfolio evidence. Regular progress reviews and coaching sessions help learners remain on track and prepare for End-Point Assessment.  

Although employers may provide dedicated study time, learners should expect to undertake some independent learning and portfolio work outside scheduled teaching sessions.

Our delivery team combines healthcare and education expertise with a strong understanding of children's services and person-centred practice. Learning is engaging, practical and directly linked to the realities of supporting children, young people and families within healthcare environments. 

Learners also benefit from specialist learning opportunities that may include exposure to health visiting, school nursing, speech and language therapy, play therapy, community paediatrics, safeguarding services and CAMHS, helping to broaden their understanding of children's healthcare pathways.
