The Senior Healthcare Support Worker Level 3 Apprenticeship is designed for learners working within mental health services who support individuals experiencing mental ill-health, emotional distress, behavioural challenges and complex mental health needs. Apprentices develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to provide safe, compassionate and recovery-focused care across a variety of mental health settings.  

Mental Health Support Workers play a vital role within multidisciplinary teams, supporting individuals to achieve positive outcomes through person-centred care, therapeutic support, effective communication and risk management. Learning is applied directly within the workplace to support high-quality mental health services and recovery-focused practice.

The apprenticeship includes a range of core learning units that build the foundations required of a Senior Healthcare Support Worker. Learners participate in remote learning sessions, workplace activities and portfolio development designed to support both professional practice and career progression.

Upon successful completion, learners may progress into a range of specialist and senior healthcare roles including:  

• Senior Mental Health Support Worker 
• Community Mental Health Worker 
• Therapy Support Worker 
• Nursing Associate Apprenticeship 
• Registered Nursing Degree Apprenticeship

Mental health services play a crucial role in supporting individuals to improve their wellbeing, manage conditions, maintain independence and achieve positive outcomes. As demand for mental health support continues to increase, employers require skilled and compassionate professionals who can work effectively with service users, families and multidisciplinary teams.  

Mental Health Support Workers are often at the centre of day-to-day care delivery. They help build therapeutic relationships, support recovery-focused interventions, promote wellbeing, contribute to risk management and encourage service users to achieve their personal goals.  

The Level 3 Senior Healthcare Support Worker Apprenticeship equips learners with the practical skills, knowledge and professional behaviours needed to deliver person-centred support safely and effectively. By investing in workforce development, organisations can improve the quality of care, strengthen service delivery and support better outcomes for those accessing mental health services.

Learners should be employed within a mental health, community health, supported living or healthcare setting where they can demonstrate the competencies required by the apprenticeship standard.  

No formal mental health qualifications are required; however, learners will benefit from a good standard of written English and the ability to complete portfolio activities and reflective practice. Functional Skills in English and maths are available where required.

The programme combines remote learning sessions, specialist pathway teaching, workplace competency development, coaching and portfolio building through the OneFile e-portfolio system. Learners apply their learning directly within their role while building evidence against the apprenticeship standard.  

Assessment activities may include workplace observations, reflective accounts, professional discussions, case studies, workbooks, witness testimonies, risk assessment activities and service improvement projects. Regular coaching and progress reviews help learners stay on track throughout their apprenticeship journey.  

Although employers may provide dedicated study time, learners should expect to undertake some independent learning and portfolio work outside scheduled teaching sessions.
