Pathology Pathway
24 Months
The Level 4 healthcare science associate pathology pathway supports laboratory workers to develop their technical and interpersonal skills, preparing apprentices for progression into more specialised roles within the pathology service.
What You'll Learn
On the programme you will complete nine core units, shared with apprentices from various healthcare science disciplines including cardiac physiology, decontamination science and ophthalmology. These lessons allow for collaboration between different disciplines and a key understanding of the wider healthcare environment.
Core units include topics such as:
- Health, Safety and Security
- Quality and Research
- Effective Communication
- Leadership and Mentoring
- Working in the Technical Environment
Pathology apprentices will then move on to their specialist units, chosen specifically to build on laboratory skills and theoretical knowledge.
These include:
- Anatomy and Physiology
- Introduction to Maths, Statistics and Physics in Healthcare Science
- General Laboratory Practice
Where This Pathway Can Take You
After completing this programme, you will have the skills to progress to a band 4 associate practitioner role in a pathology laboratory. You may also choose to progress onto the Level 6 Biomedical Scientist degree apprenticeship which is offered by multiple universities across the UK.
Why This Pathway Matters
There is growing demand for pathology services and staff with the expertise to maintain laboratory efficiency through technical competence and theoretical knowledge. According to the Royal College of Pathology, over 300,000 pathology tests are performed across the UK every day. Pathology is an important part of the patient pathway, providing diagnostic investigations and monitoring for over 95% of patients receiving care.
Entry Requirements
There are no minimum requirements for applicants to have been working in a pathology environment for a set number of years, however a willingness to learn, develop your career and overall curiosity into pathology is welcomed!
Applicants would ideally have some awareness and understanding of general pathology practices such as health and safety, quality and specimen reception procedures.
For general apprenticeship eligibility, applicants should typically:
- Be aged 16 or over
- Be eligible to work in the UK and meet residency requirements
- Not be in full-time education at the point of starting
- Be able to undertake employment and commit to the full apprenticeship programme, including work and study
We welcome applications from individuals at different stages of their career, whether you are starting out, looking to upskill, or considering a new direction.
Please note: Final eligibility will be confirmed in line with government funding rules and any specific employer requirements.
Study And Workplace Balance
Taught lessons take place once a month, followed by 4 weeks to complete the assignment tasks.
Assessment is split into knowledge and skills, with knowledge tasks giving apprentices time to research and develop academic writing skills alongside an understanding of the topic. Skills assignments are where apprentices can show how they meet the criteria in the workplace, completing tasks such as photo diaries, annotated forms and witness testimonies.
A Day In This Pathway Might Include:
- Performing quality control on analysers to ensure they are fit for purpose
- Researching the theory behind diagnostic tests
- Ensuring safe receipt of patient samples following best practice
What Makes This Pathway Special?
Our newly developed anatomy e-learning platform allows learners to explore each body system in depth, as well as various causes of diseases ranging from systemic to localised disease.
The specialist unit in general laboratory practice allows learners to showcase their skills and development across the apprenticeship through work-based evidence, live observations and potential shadowing opportunities where possible
The pathology pathway is coached by tutors with experience across all pathology departments, allowing for personalised support for each apprentice.
