Working within a healthcare setting is both interesting and rewarding. You will be working in a GP practice, hospital or other healthcare based business and gaining vital skills to be the efficient and welcoming face of your department or practice. You will be either starting or developing your career, gaining knowledge and confidence to work in the field of medical administration, working with health professionals and patients, providing vital administrative support.

The apprenticeship in medical administration is for people who want to work in administrative support roles in public or private sector organisations, or people who want to improve their administrative and supervisory skills. This programme will prepare the learner to work in the field of medical administration, learning skills in medical terminology and data protection.

The apprenticeship comprises of:

  • Level 2 Diploma in medical administration
  • Functional skills maths (Level 1) * exempt subject to GCSE A-C previously achieved
  • Functional skills English (Level 1) * exempt subject to GCSE A-C previously achieved
  • Functional skills ICT (Level 1) * exempt subject to GCSE A-C previously achieved
  • Employer rights and responsibilities

Initial assessment:

Initial assessment must be used to ensure that applicants have a fair opportunity to demonstrate their ability. Learning programmes can then be tailored to meet a range of abilities and to recognise prior knowledge and experience.

Assessment:

Apprenticeships are a mixture of skills assessment and the delivery of new skills and knowledge. Assessment is done at the workplace whilst the apprentice performs their job using a range of methods which include portfolio building, professional discussion and direct observations by an assessor

Completion times:

Completion times range from generally 12 months for an Intermediate level to 18 months for an Advanced level. However, these times can vary depending on the skills, experience and the progress of the apprentice.

Progression:

Intermediate apprentices, with support and opportunities in the workplace, can progress onto: the Level 3 advanced apprenticeship in business administration - general administrative or medical pathways. A range of business and other medical related further education programmes for medical administrative secretaries, medical office managers and medical records transcriptors.

With additional training, Intermediate apprentices may be able to progress in their careers to roles including medical secretary, administration team leader, office supervisor, personal assistant or a wide range of other business administration roles.
