Occupation profile

This qualification is to assess knowledge, understanding and skills in management within health and social care and children and young people’s services. It confirms competence in these areas and gives candidates the opportunity to build both their managerial and care skills. It enhances advanced practice within health and social care and children and young people’s services and fulfills the regulatory requirement for managers of children’s homes or adult residential and domiciliary services. Who is the qualification for? This qualification is for those already working in health and social care. You might be an assistant or deputy manager, or a manager who has not yet achieved a recognised vocational qualification at this level. The qualification is relevant to job roles such as:

  • domiciliary and day service settings Senior healthcare assistants/support workers in community and primary care environments
  • Senior support workers in supported living projects
  • Community-based senior care assistants/support workers/key workers, including those working in specialist areas e.g. dementia, learning disabilities 
  • Personal assistants employed directly by the individual they support or their families


The Level 5 Diploma has a variety of pathways available to you depending on your job role:

  • Children and Young People’s Management
  • Children and Young People’s Advanced Practice
  • Adults’ Residential Management
  • Adults’ Management
  • Adults’ Advanced Practice

Programme delivery

The programme is predominantly work-based, with additional knowledge sessions, including regular reviews containing activity planning and target setting by a visiting assessor.
In order to achieve, you must demonstrate that you meet the relevant stated outcomes and demonstrate the required knowledge and understanding. This will be achieved through a balance of observations carried out by the assessor and the production of a workplace portfolio of evidence.

Number of credits that must be achieved: 90
Number of mandatory credits that must be achieved: 30
Number of credits that must be achieved from a your chosen pathway: 60

NB. The minimum of 90 credits must include the below listed unit.
Unit 70, Understand Professional Management and Leadership in Health and Social Care or Children and Young People’s Settings


You could progress to Level 7 Management or Higher Education programmes within their specialist area.
