Healthcare support workers (HCSWs) work as part of a team providing high quality and compassionate care to individuals. As a health care support worker (HCSW) you could be assisting therapists, nurses, hospital doctors, midwives and other healthcare professionals. You will carry out well-defined routine clinical duties like monitoring an individual’s condition (eg. checking blood pressure, temperature or weight). Depending on where you work, you may also help them to eat, drink, wash, dress or go to the toilet. You will prepare individuals for healthcare activities carried out by other members of the healthcare team, looking after them before, during and/or after those activities. HCSWs work in a range of healthcare settings and your team may include workers from both health and social care. Support work is a good way to gain access to a career in the healthcare sector.

Entry requirements

There are no entry requirements to the apprenticeship, however employers may run their own selection process.

Programme qualification and requirements

Apprentices without Level 1 English and Maths will need to achieve this level and take the test for Level 2 English and Maths prior to completion of the apprenticeship

Programme details

You will be allocated a Skills & Development Coach who will support and guide you for the duration of your apprenticeship. The apprenticeship programme will be delivered as blended learning. Blended learning is a combination of both online and face to face delivery. You will need to have good internet access and a suitable device such as a smart phone, laptop, or tablet to work on. Microsoft Teams is used for coaching sessions and ZOOM is currently used for taught sessions. Please discuss accessibility with your employer as these applications are required, in order for you to complete your training.

This apprenticeship usually takes 12 months to complete during which you will participate in training, development and on-going review activities. These typically include: • Induction which is specific to your workplace and at a minimum meets the 15 standards required by the Care Quality Commission [as set out in the Care Certificate] • Study days and training courses • Mentoring/buddy support • Completion of workbooks or a portfolio through which you will gather evidence of your progress • Structured one to one reviews of your progress with your employer and/or Dynamic Training.

Although not a requirement, your employer may request you complete a regulated vocational qualification during the on-programme phase of your apprenticeship which will be supported by Dynamic Training.

Assessment gateway

Your employer will make the decision as to when you are ready to undertake the end point assessment. In order to be put forward for end point assessment, you will need to have achieved the key requirements of your apprenticeship.

End point assessment

The end point assessment is undertaken by an independent assessment organisation chosen by your employer and comprises of an observation of practice, multiple choice test and a portfolio of evidence review with interview. In order to complete and achieve your apprenticeship, you will need to pass all components.
