As a Healthcare science assistant, you will support healthcare science practitioners, clinical scientists and others in a variety of healthcare science areas within the NHS or private providers, working in laboratories, wards and outpatient departments with clinical staff and equipment. For example, as a healthcare science assistant you might work in:

  • a pathology laboratory, processing samples of blood, cells or tissues
  • a cardiology department, taking readings of a patient's heart
  • respiratory department, measuring a patient's breathing

Professional recognition

On completion of the Healthcare Science Assistant apprenticeship, you are eligible to apply to join the Academy for Healthcare Science (AHCS) accredited register

Progression

After completing the Healthcare Science Assistant apprenticeship, you can progress into a Healthcare Science Assistant job within a number of specialisms. You can also progress onto the Level 4 Healthcare Science Associate apprenticeship.

Programme qualifications and requirements

  • The Level 2 Diploma in Healthcare Science must be achieved before proceeding to end point assessment, to meet the Healthcare Science Assistant standard.
  • Level 1/2 English and mathematics must be achieved prior to proceeding to end point assessment.
  • A portfolio of evidence must be completed and available for end point assessment

You will be allocated a Skills & Development Coach who will support and guide you for the duration of your apprenticeship. The apprenticeship programme will be delivered as blended learning. Blended learning is a combination of both online and face to face delivery. You will need to have good internet access and a suitable device such as a smart phone, laptop, or tablet to work on. Microsoft Teams is used for coaching sessions and ZOOM is currently used for taught sessions. Please discuss accessibility with your employer as these applications are required, in order for you to complete your training.

This apprenticeship usually takes 12 months to complete during which you will participate in training, development and on-going review activities. These typically include: • Induction which is specific to your workplace • Study days and training courses • Mentoring/buddy support • Completion of workbooks or a portfolio through which you will gather evidence of your progress • Structured one to one reviews of your progress with your employer and/or Dynamic Training

Assessment gateway

Your employer will  make the decision as to when you are ready to undertake the end point assessment. In order to be put forward for end point assessment, you will need to have achieved the key requirements of your apprenticeship. 

End point assessment

The end point assessment is undertaken by an independent assessment organisation chosen by your employer and comprises of a vocational competence observation, professional practice test and a review of your portfolio of evidence and professional discussion.  All three components must be undertaken and passed in order to achieve and complete your apprenticeship.
